The Project and its aims
The aim of the project was to create a soundtrack for four pieces of silent film that the pupils already had on their Macs. The silent film had been produced by pupils as part of a previous project and clips were chosen to illustrate a range of emotions and action.
Pupils were shown a step by step way of using Garageband on the Macs from creating a track to extending music loops and changing the pitch.
Pupils were expected to create four pieces of music by the end of the day, ready for publishing. CLC staff worked in collaboration with the music teacher to provide support and guidance in the choice of soundtrack.
How was the project run?
This was a Year 11, GCSE Music class and they were to create a film score for four short pieces of silent film that were provided.
They were shown the four clips without sound as a whole class and then they were shown, step-by-step, how to create and manipulate tracks on the Garageband software they were using to create their film scores.
Once the class had understood what was required of them and how they were to achieve this they each set to work.
The first section took around an hour to do properly and then the class had roughly three hours to complete their film scores.
Once completed, the files were converted to Quicktime format and transferred to one Mac where they were played for the whole class to see and enjoy.
Outcomes of the project
The project was very well received and by the end the teacher and pupils no longer needed full support from the CLC. Similar activities will be undertaken by the teacher and the class on a more regular basis, especially now as the teacher can lead the class without depending on the CLC for quite as much support.
